The person who takes your history is the person who reads your results and rings you back. Continuity is most of what makes primary care work, and it is the part patients most often lose.

I have been the patient who did not understand
I arrived in the United States as an adult and learned this healthcare system from the outside. So I explain things until they make sense, in plain language, however long that takes.
Trained across the whole of medicine
Surgery, emergency medicine, obstetrics, paediatrics, kidney and liver, behavioural health, and underserved primary care with the Indian Health Service. It means I recognise what is serious and what can safely wait.
More handled in the room, fewer referrals
Skin biopsies, incision and drainage, wound closure, joint injections, Nexplanon and IUD placement. Done here, so it is one appointment instead of three.

Family medicine covers a lot of ground. These are the things I see most, and the procedures I can do here rather than sending you elsewhere.
Preventive care and annual physicals
Yearly wellness visits, screenings and vaccinations, with time to talk through what the results mean.
Ongoing and chronic conditions
Diabetes, blood pressure, thyroid and cholesterol, and the steady management that keeps them stable.
Women’s health
Pap smears, contraception including Nexplanon and IUD placement, and routine gynaecologic concerns.
Minor procedures in the clinic
Skin biopsies, incision and drainage, wound closure and joint injections.
Acute and same-week problems
Infections, injuries and the things that will not wait for a routine appointment.

Well child checks, developmental milestones and everyday paediatric illness.

Three years of free clinics, more than twenty of them
Between 2012 and 2015 I volunteered with Remote Area Medical at free clinics across Virginia and Tennessee, and ran my university’s volunteer programme for those trips. That meant booking the van, collecting students in the dark and being on site from three in the morning. Most of my own hours went to the dental area, where the queue was always longest.
Six countries, and a queue of people waiting to be seen
I did not take a direct route into medicine. I took the long one, and I would not trade it, because it is the reason I understand what it is like to be the patient who does not speak the language and does not know how any of this works.
Every day I go to work, I get a chance to make a difference in someone’s life. I find deep purpose in helping people understand complex information, and I greatly value the opportunity to connect with them on a personal level.
Zobia Zafar, MPAS, PA-C
Born there in 1984, and it was home until 1992.
Where the family settled next. I finished school there and began pre-medical study.
Medical school at Avicenna Tajik State Medical University, in Dushanbe.
A decade, including two years in Singapore.
Arrived in 2012. Michigan first, then Virginia for my degree, then Utah.
Laveen, and a licence to practise, in 2023.
My family built hospitals for people who had none
I grew up in Pakistan in a Christian family whose work was to found and run non-profit hospitals, including Mariam Hospital, funded through the United Nations. We ran free clinics out in the remote areas and handed out food aid alongside the care, so that people who had walked a long way to see a doctor did not leave hungry as well as unwell.
That work made us a target. Religious persecution turned into violence. One of my brothers was imprisoned. Another was killed. In the end my family left Pakistan and was granted asylum in the United States.
We left behind everything we had built, and carried out the one thing that could not be taken: that medicine is a calling, not a career.
